What about GPS Trackers in Private Investigations?
GPS trackers can save money on a private investigation but they must be used legally. Some states allow them and some don't. They can be put on a car and the target vehicle can then be followed from anywhere if the have "live" tracking capability. The unit will send the location to a server that the tracker owner or renter can use a computer to follow or even receive updates will a cell phone using text messages. This way an investigator can track a car until it stops and go to the location (Such as a hotel room) to get the evidence. Again, while it can save money, you have to make sure it is legal first. Any PI that you talk to should be able to tell you what you can and cannot do with a tracker in the area that that you need the investigation to be performed in.
- Check the rates of a few agencies in the area. as well as the experience of the investigator that may be working on your case.
- You want to talk directly to the Private Investigator that will be handling your case. In larger agencies, the investigator may not be the person that you talk to on the phone. If the agency will not let you talk to the actual investigator, move on to another PI Firm. If they don't trust their own Private Detectives to talk to the client, how good of an investigator is he or she? There should be a bond between you the client and your investigator.
How much does a Private Investigator Cost?
- The typical rates for a Private Investigator run between $ 45.00 and $ 200.00 per hour depending on the location. Investigators in rural areas usually charge less than ones in the larger urban areas due to the increased expenses of running a business in a populated area. There are usually additional fees for mileage and other expenses that are involved. If hotel rooms are needed or flights, the expense is added on top of the rate in most cases. Also, a lot of PI's charge a minimum so be sure to ask.
- The mileage rates seem to vary between .25 and $ 1.25 a mile. Some agencies will waive the mileage fees though depending on the case and how long they will need to work it.
- If a second investigator is needed (like following someone in a heavily congested area) the rate can be substantially more.
